A look back at AHIP Institute 2015

Denise LoudenParticipants from across Optum™ and more than 100 health plan organizations gathered in Nashville June 3–5 for the 2015 America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Institute. Recognized as the premier trade event for payer organizations, more than 4,000 attendees representing health plans and affiliated businesses attend AHIP annually. The event traditionally attracts mid-to-senior level executives, providing an excellent platform for Optum to meet with clients and industry leaders to showcase the solutions and services we offer to help health plans thrive in this post reform era.

This year’s conference featured prominent keynote speakers including Colin Hill of GNS Healthcare, Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos, Patrick Soon-Shiong from NantHealth, Former President Bill Clinton and the honorable Mitt Romney. In addition to our exhibit space, Optum facilitated three insightful sessions:

  • In the Prevention and Wellness pre-forum, Heather Jarrett, vice president, population health, and Dr. Bernie Elliott, senior national medical director, clinical shared services, explored what a modernized system with synchronized clinical information and data can look like. Key strategies to integrated care management were presented, closing with an eye-opening example demonstrating a consumer centric approach to oncology management.
  • Amy Fleckenstein, vice president, consumer engagement, led an interactive and insightful discussion challenging attendees to think about and compare a typical online retail experience with that of a typical health care system experience. Conversations focused on how health plans might approach engaging with health care consumers in new ways.
  • The final day of AHIP kicked off with a fully packed room for an early morning session, led by Jim Maher, vice president of growth consulting and John Murtha, vice president of growth consulting. This session outlined the dynamics of a regulated post-reform era, exploring how health plans might act on the challenges and adapt operations to support new markets, products and reimbursement models
  • In addition to the Optum-facilitated sessions, Meyrick Yaz, vice president, Optum global solutions participated in a panel hosted by SilverLink, which addressed how health plans can leverage software and member engagement scores to drive a more proactive member experience to improve member outcomes and lower costs.

The AHIP Institute is a unique opportunity for industry leaders to come together to discuss how we can best move the health care system forward. I would like to express my thanks to those who attended our presentations, visited our booth and engaged with us through social media. And as a first time attendee, I was impressed, not surprised, by the caliber and remarkable expertise of our Optum team. A big thanks and much appreciation to all those whose contributions helped make this event such a huge success.
